Kaokoland,
in the far northeast of Namibia, is strictly for
the more adventurous. The scenery is dramatic, there
are small pockets of desert-adapted game, and it
is home to nomadic groups of Himba people.
Perhaps more than
any other area of Namibia, it's a fragile environment
where visitors must travel with local guides who
know and are committed to the area. A high degree
of cultural sensitivity is essential - it's not
a place to blunder in on your own.
However, if you'd
like to spend time exploring the area with sensitive
guides, then you'll find a stay here fascinating.
One way to visit is on a fly-in trip with Skeleton
Coast Safaris, who have been working with the
local people in the area for over a decade now. |
