Just
south of Otjiwarongo, Okonjima is a relaxed farm
owned by the Hanssen family. A stay here at the
Main Camp or the luxurious new Bush Camp includes
all your meals and activities.
You
can walk around the enormous ranch if you wish,
or go on a guided trail where one of your hosts
will illustrate the lifestyle of some of the region's
original people.
That
said, big cats are the main attraction. Namibia
has over 20% of the world's cheetah population
- the largest in the world. Okonjima is the centre
of the Africat programme, which is devoted to
saving Namibia's big cats. These involve cheetah,
leopard, lion and even caracal. A stay of one
or two nights here will usually give you the chance
to see big cats at close range. (Note: for safety
reasons children under 12
are not allowed at Okonjima.) |
